Apocalypse Hal - Cannibalism

We don't avoid the big issues here at BZF!

Pho is a popular street food in Vietnam. It is a rice noodle soup with meat and herbs. It is a popular lunchtime dish at my work as it is cheap, quick and tasty - so I couldn't resist a bit of an inside joke.

And I couldn't resist adding in Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner.

Don't bite off more human that you can chew (it's inpolite)

Mmmmmmm Zombies?

I know the words sweet, delicious and decadent are not usually associated with the common zombie.  However, if you are lucky enough to be situated near Spokane Washington USA then it’s a different story all together!  I know every second man and his Chihuahua is saying that zombies have reached a total saturation point and to this I say nay, let the crusty zombie continue its journey into the pages of history or should that be into our stomachs??
BZF fans, it is with jealous taste buds that I present to you the most awesome idea for a takeaway joint in a long time – Dawn of the Donut!  No I’m not kidding, and yes I am salivating profusely, there is actually a zombie themed donut takeaway shop and I for one am very excited!

So I have gone through the menu with very hungry eyes and I have picked out two of the donuts I would most like to try!  Why only two you ask?  If I were to review them all, I would most likely be on a plane tomorrow with seven pairs of stretchy pants, one for each day of the week.

Brains!  Believe it or not this is an apple fritter with raspberry icing, genius I know and why isn’t there one in my house for dessert!

Coco Apocalypse – Anyone who knows me is well aware that I will eat almost anything that has chocolate on it. This is no exception and I would be happy for this to be my final meal should the worst come true.

I encourage you all to check out the Dawn of the Donut website for more beatifully grotesque tasty treats which any starved zombie would happily sink their teeth into.  Such is the popularity of Dawn of the Donut, their local news program reported on the growing success of this culinary phenomenon, check it out here.

Apocalypse Hal - Onesies

The chilly dark days of winter are behind us here in Australia, but I thought it worth mentioning Onesies.

Miss K may hang her head in shame but the Onesies phenomenon just seems to be growing. Even the local high school kids wear them to school. And they come a range of cool designs like the Spyro the Dragon Onesie.

So would they be any use in an apocalypse?

Zombies on Parade

Under normal circumstances, if you were to see a horde of zombies coming your way, I would strongly advise you to run in the opposite direction. There is however one instance where a zombie horde is to be applauded and viewed up close and personal!  This week, BZF wants you to feel the zombie love and spare your fake blood, latex skin and hopefully a few dollars for a very worthy cause.

Over the last few years here in Australia, zombie walks have started to gain in popularity as the undead take over the main streets of capital cities and stumble along their merry way while citizens look on in pure horror or pure delight.   To gain momentum and approval in the mainstream, zombie walks have become a great fundraising vehicle for some highly respected charities.

The 2013 Zombie Walk (happening across the country from June to November) will see all proceeds going towards the Brain Foundation, which really couldn’t be more appropriate for a bunch of hungry zombies.  The Brain Foundation do wonderful work in the areas of brain research, disease and injury, so it is definitely worth your time to get involved and march with pride.

Mrs K knows all too well that I like to get my zombie on whenever I can (because I’m worth it) and I am happy to use any excuse possible to transform myself into a ghastly creature of the night and no I am not referring to last weekend! Seriously though, the team here at BZF are super excited about getting a group of friends together to let out our inner zombie while supporting the Brain Foundation.  Our home city event is in November and you can best believe that I will be posting a follow up article with all the zombie goss and plenty of putrid pics!

For more information check out the Brain Foundations website.

Apocalypse Hal - Shotgun Chic 2

Apocalypse fashion for the guys.

Taking inspiration from the old Mad Max movies with the home made armor and sawn off shotguns.  And remember black leather never goes out of style, even if it totally impractical for the Aussie summer.

Friday the 13th and another birthday

This week features a couple of important events.

First and foremost, this week marked the birthday of BZF's inspirational founder and fashion guru, Miss K!

On behalf of everyone at BZF and our growing band of readers, I want to wish her a (belated) happy birthday. I gather there are big celebrations planned this weekend, so take it easy with those zombie vodka shots Miss K and enjoy the presents!

Secondly, it's Friday the 13th. So to set the mood here is a bit of animated fun.

Zombie Goggles

Have you ever been to a party, had a little too much of your favourite beverage and well maybe done some things you regretted the next day?  Oh come on BZF fans, we are all friends here and nobody will judge you if you were filmed dancing in your tighty whiteys with a coconut bra on and scored 250 000 views on Youtube under the title ‘Pretty fly for a white skinny guy LOL’ – hmmm never mind.
Well first let me say that we encourage everything in moderation here at BZF and you should never drink and drive, especially if there is a healthy population of bunnies near your major roads!  Today I want to share with you a few zombie themed drinks that are super delicious but also look the part and will certainly impress your friends at your next social soiree!  To view the full recipe just click the heading of each drink.

Not only does this look impressive but it also tastes great.  I do warn you, the consistency is disgusting – but that’s the point!!  I definitely recommend you have a few attempts to perfect this shot because it looks most impressive when you get the gooey clouding just right!
Zombie Vodka Shot

Let’s face it, when it comes to a zombies number one food of choice its Brrrraaaiiiinnnssssss right?  So what is their drink of choice you ask?  Well the answer is rather quite similar, just in shot form!  Another tasty treat, watch as the Baileys curdles and creates a brain in your shot glass right before your eyes – mmmmmm tasty!

I will ask you to apply extreme caution when making/consuming Jelly Shots.  We all think a bit of Jelly can’t hurt no one because of our fond memories of this dessert when we were kids, well just ask my friend Ricky what happened when he downed 28 Jelly shots and by the end of the night was engaged and a potential father of 3 – again never mind.  The picture does say it all though, yum!!

So please do enjoy the above drinks at your next social gathering, they are quite eye catching and hit the spot in terms of taste, but remember not to go over the top as Zombie Goggles may get you into more trouble than you bargained for!

Apocalypse Hal - Shotgun Chic 1

It's spring and that means a bunch of new fashions will be be hitting the catwalks around Australia. So it's time for some apocalypse fashion. After all, if you are going to carry a weapon, you got to do it in style!

This is inspired by my mum, particularly that old photo of her from the 1960s. All mascaraed up, with the beehive hairdo, leopard print mini skirt and extra long cigarette holder. She was also handy with the shotgun, particularly during the drought of 68 when she had to defend the farmhouse from ravenous feral cats.

Next week Shotgun Chic for the males.

Introducing......

Ok BZF lovers hold on to your leopard print panties because this week we have something very special to share with you!  First let me say I want you all to know that BZF got the inside scoop when you see the following name up in lights – it’s time for you to meet Kayleigh!  That’s right friends, the tip-off came courtesy of Miss Sugar & Spice who let me know that this future mega star was in the country.
So here is the buzz, apart from auditioning for films like Harry Potter and the  Da Vinci Code, Kayleigh is now setting her sites on a stage production of the legendary zombie film Night of the Living Dead!!  Upon hearing this news I was A) hysterically excited that a stage version of this classic film was coming to life and B) that I would have the opportunity to meet and greet this wonderfully charismatic young star on the rise.

I’m already friends with her on Facebook and addicted to her Tweets like Miley Cyrus and twerking but I did get a chance to take 12 minutes and 45 seconds to gain an insight into the preparation for Kayleigh’s next big audition, check out my very first BZF interview below!

MVG:  Kayleigh, how are you preparing for the stage version of Night of the Living Dead?
K: Lots of watching zombie movies, I’ve been re-watching The Walking Dead, thinking about if I’ll be playing a zombie or a victim – how I would act when I’m dead or when I’m dying (giggles)
MVG:  So you are a walking dead fan?
K:  Oh yeah I love it!
MVG: Are you a fan of the zombie genre?
K:  Somewhat, I’ve seen the original and the new Dawn of the Dead, I love Shaun of the Dead and I do love all horror movies.
MVG: Do you remember the movie that got you hooked to being a horror fan?
K:  Probably, the first ones I watched were The Exorcist and Candyman but I remember being younger and my mum turning them off when she saw me watching them.  I was just intrigued and I always actually wanted to finish watching them and I love the feeling of being scared, even when I was little and yeah I think that was it, the fact that I wasn’t allowed to watch them and I wanted to.
MVG:  What kind of character would you like to audition for in this production?
K:  I think it would be interesting to play a victim, because I’ve never done that before.  I know one of the roles is a child, and when I was at college - because I’m quite short and have a baby face I was always typecast as the child or the mental patient (giggles), so this time I think I would quite like to be a victim like a survivor.
MVG: So how is your scream?
K:  I do a fantastic scream
MVG:  Oh really?
K:  I really do!
MVG:  If the apocalypse was to actually eventuate and you saw civilization crumbling beneath your feet, what would you do in those crucial first 24 hours?
K:  Now, I can’t drive so I would probably kill myself faster if I tried to run away, so I think my first thought would be to find somewhere safe and just barricade myself in, ummmm and just keep watch and see if there is a certain time I can go out and find anyone.
MVG:  Sounds like a smart move.
Miss Sugar & Spice:  What scares you the most?
K:  My thing that freaks me out the most is the idea of a face at the window.
MVG: Ok, tell me more.
K:  Growing up I lived in a big house, with a big garden and big windows and when it’s dark outside (but light inside) you can’t really see anything outside coz its dark, it’s just that idea of a face appearing at the window, it totally freaks me out!
MVG:  Any final words to the BZF fans around the world?
K:  All I would say is, keep being creative, keep making horror movies because I love watching them!

There you have it, our BZF scoop on this super talented star on the rise Kayleigh – but beware, if she does fall victim to a zombies bite, she might just come looking for you!!

(A potential portrait of Kayleigh post zombie bite)
