Apocalpse Hal - Survival cards 2

It's Father's day here in Australia and if you totally forgot to grab a gift, don't worry. You can always print off some handy survival cards for your dad.

Personally I wanted an electric rechargeable chainsaw. Lightweight, quiet and handy for slicing through zombie hordes.  Sadly my family doesn't trust me with power tools.

Of course as we at BZF live "down under" the methods for finding south and north are for the southern hemisphere. If you live in the northern hemisphere you need to use the north star and for the watch method you point the hour hand at sun rather than the 12 o'clock mark.

Talented artist - Choly Knight

There are many talent artists out there but this is one we had to share with you.

Choly Knight is an artist, writer, designer, seamstress and crafter. She produces some cool and edgy fashion creations. What particular wowed us was her zombie themed fashion.  Check out Deviantart for her zombie kitty/killer rabbit reversible backpack and her Zombunny hoodies!

This stuff is so awesome that we are kicking ourselves and muttering "why didn't we think of that".

The sewing machine and I had a very bad relationship back during high school home economics but this is seriously making me think again.

Oh No They Didn't!!

Ok BZF peeps, I want you to brace yourselves for the craziest trailer I have come across in ages!  I’m going to cut right to the chase and tell you about a movie coming your way in 2014 called Squirrels, yep you heard me Squirrels!!  Naturally here at BZF we have a preference for the cute and cuddly Bunny, so excuse my raised eyebrow and jaw to the floor reaction when this trailer came online.

So far not much is known about Squirrels, except that the production team behind Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter are helming, which doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence.  Apparently we can expect some flesh hungry Squirrels who are super mad because an evil Gas company has destroyed their natural habitat (insert crickets chirping).  I’m not sure that Squirrels banding together and gnawing away at people one by one will have the same impact that Hitchcock’s The Birds did all those years ago or break new ground in the ‘when unsuspecting animals attack’ sub genre.
Don’t get me wrong, I love B movies and I love a little foray into the ridiculous but I don’t think this is gonna reach the dizzy heights of 2013’s surprise mockbuster Sharknado.  I know I am sounding a little harsh and I will admit that a small part of me would enjoy seeing furry little critters going feral and pursuing a flesh binge, but we will have to wait and see.
To make up your mind, I invite you to check out the teaser trailer below:

Apocalypse Hal - D Rations

Another classic survival ration - the U.S. Army Field Ration D!

A bit sweet for my taste but these bars did disappear very quickly. Dissolving it in hot water makes a rather rich and thick hot chocolate. Currently working on a dark chocolate and chilli version!

I'll be honest, I'm not sure about paraffin wax being an ingredient. It was included in the unofficial recipe I used. Hershey was contracted to develop and make the original D rations and their website doesn't mention any wax. Nor is it listed as an ingredient on the original packaging.

However the D ration had to stand up to being stored and used in areas of high temperatures like the Pacific and desert regions. Adding a fat or wax with a higher melting point than chocolate would help.

Read about it at the Hershey archive

And you can even buy online D ration reproduction packaging, molds and the recipe if you really want.

Run Zombie, Run!!

Here in Australia we are finally seeing signs of Spring, the cherry blossoms are beginning to sprout, the daylight is getting longer and the zombies are starting to unthaw from their winter chill.  Now when I talk about zombies in this context, yes I mean all the people out there who have hidden all winter beneath a nice warm blanket with a hot chocolate and some choice DVD’s.
I’m sure you’re thinking this sounds like the perfect way to chase away those winter blues – WRONG!!  Having recently returned to my physical schedule of swimming a few times a week, I discovered just how unfit this season I had become.
Care factor?  Well, As I hung on to the edge of the pool, trying not to drown and trying to maintain some form of dignity, I hoped that the apocalypse was not approaching anytime soon – coz let’s face it, I could probably only run 100 metres before I ran out of breath and got eaten by a hungry horde of voracious zombies!

So what to do next?  The popular film Zombieland tells us to keep up our cardio and based on my current circumstances I tend to agree.  I know ‘working out’ can seem like a real chore and many would probably offer up their second best friend to the undead before joining a gym, but never fear there is a fun alternative that may just get you off the couch and give you some Chuck Norris abs (mullet not included).

Please welcome my new favourite App Zombies Run!  What more motivation do you need to exercise than escaping from zombies, completing lifesaving missions and important supply runs!  This simply put is a super creative way to immerse yourself in the middle of a zombie ravaged planet while improving your fitness at the same time.

Each time you perform a mission, the app records the distance, time, pace and calories burned by using your phone’s GPS – Genius!!  This concept works for a number of reasons.  First of all there are no real zombies to bite you to pieces. Second, you have the chance to build up your skills slowly as you develop your fitness and your recon skills.  And finally, after you have persisted with this fun little program – you will have improved fitness levels to outrun real zombies should the worst come true.

I’m sure right now you want to have a sneak peak at what this little baby is like so make sure you check out the video below!

Apocalypse Hal - Good vs Evil

The moral dilemmas of living in a post apocalyptic world! A perfect opportunity for a bit of  Star Wars parody.

I gather the Jabba the Hutt scene (with Princess Lelia as a slave girl) scores high on the geekiness scale. So I had to include it.

Amazingly enough you can buy Princess Lelia slave girl costumes online. There are even Jabba the Hutt costumes too - it's a strange world out there.

Kim Possible

I'm a fan of Kim Possible - one freak fighting, teenage cheerleader with a website. I always though a few zombies would be so not the drama for this teenager. After all she did battle those evil zombie snowmen in Day of the Snowmen.

Zombie Tatoos

Hey BZF Fans
Some of you may be aware that Mrs K has some gorgeous tattoos, including a matching one she got on her honeymoon with the always handsome Mr K!  We were having the ink discussion one day and a colleague from work (Miss A) also mentioned that her husband has a tattoo, even though he is not the kind of guy that you would suspect to have one.
Inspired by this conversation, I thought I would delve a little deeper and find out if people were into zombie tattoos!  I myself do not have any, but I’m always fascinated to learn the reasons why people get inked in the first place, whether it’s out of love, devotion or just because you had too many bourbon and cokes one night at a seedy pub and thought you should add it to the list of achievements for the night.

I have managed to gather a few designs that I think look pretty cool, so let’s take a look!

These zombie hands bring one phrase to mind…….BEHIND YOU!!!!  Not only does this look awesome but it is a wonderful reminder whenever you look in the mirror that zombies might be undead, but they are also the masters of surprise.

Let’s be honest, zombies are creepy, but add children zombies into the mix and you have a Mr Vitamin G in need of an adult size continence aid!  This design also works as a perfect conversation starter at social gatherings.

What do you do when you’re a comic hero/zombie fan and can’t decide which one to get tattooed on your skin?  Well you can invent SuperZombie Man – A super hero who is already dead, therefore eliminating any annoying potential weaknesses like Kryptonite.

And finally, we can’t forget about one of our mascots here at BZF, what could be more appropriate than a zombiefied version of the White Rabbit?  If you’re thinking about getting a zombie tattoo, don’t be late for such an important date!

I hope this small selection has given you some food for thought if you’re thinking about committing to the ink, or at least to consider which one of your friends might be concealing a ghastly image beneath their clothes!

Apocalypse Hal - Zombie Song

When I was very young, Hector's road safety song was my first line of defence against speeding Holdens. It was a nostalgic surprise to find a copy of the original TV advert on YouTube.

It occurred on me that with a little tweaking Hector safety message could prove useful in teaching young kids about zombie awareness. Here's the YouTube link if you want to listen to the original jingle first.

Brought to you by the Office of Zombie Safety. Enjoy!

The Zombie Squad??

Every now and then a bunch of nondescript cars converge on the empty office buildings near our work. There were there again today.

The sign says it's all a police training exercise. But what exactly are they training for?

I have seen some pretty impressive equipment hauled out of those cars and one time half a dozen dogs were there too.

Why the secrecy? Are they training for the inevitable zombie outbreak?

Is it the Zombie Squad?

Are they biting out more than they can chew?

Stars without makeup

So it seems like every month or so some tabloid magazine is running a feature showing celebrities without make-up.  Now I’m not 100% sure what the fascination is here, are we expecting to see garish ugly haggard women with some kind of monstrous complexion?  Frankly, I’m not so shocked when I see these Hollywood hotties without their lips and lashes on, we the public are more than aware of Photoshop and airbrushing  - or are we?
These defamatory articles constantly seem to target the ladies of this landscape and very rarely the fellas, so I felt it was my duty to dig a little deeper and present my own expose!  Ladies and gentlemen, sit back and relax as I bring you some shocking 'with and without makeup' images of men minus their manscara, mandation and manshadow.

Simon Pegg

Oh dear can you say moisturiser please? Mrs K where are you, we need some Nivea stat!!
 Nicholas Hoult

 Yikes, can you say sunlight??

Billy Connelly

Ok so it’s one thing to be caught looking like this, but whats with the 90’s dog collar?

Bill Murray

It must be terrible to have permanent tea bags under your eyes and frown lines deeper than the Grand Canyon, book this boy in for some micro-dermabrasion !

So clearly, we ALL have days when we feel like a zombie but the next time you see you’re fav celeb looking all glamorous and flawless, ask yourself, what’s really hiding underneath the smoke and mirrors?

Apocalypse Hal - Army Disposals

There is something about a good old army disposal store. They're an Aladdin's cave of cool equipment, racks of clothing, wicked looking knives and a sense of wonder.

Naturally I did a bit of retail therapy while in Queensland but time, budget and those damn airplane baggage limits kept me in check. And Queensland seems to have the best stores too.

Killer jewellery

In times of uncertainty, for example the zombie apocalypse,  a woman's got to have a few tricks up her sleeve, well at least on her hand. I'm talk about poison rings - killer jewellery in the extreme.

These rings feature a secret container that can be used to hold poison, either to allow you to poison your enemy, or in the worst case, when you have completly exhausted all of your options and zombies are pouring in World War Z style, for suicide. Of course they can store other things like messages, medicine or keepsakes from your loved ones.

These types of rings became quite popular in Europe around the sixteenth and seventh centuries. These these two belong to Mr Rimsky's mum but are more modern versions. Yes, a scan of the web indicates a range of poison rings for sale. And judging from Pinterest there are very cool designs out there, from Gothic inspired coffins and spiders to more decorative styles.

Jewellery with killer fair, you got to love that.

Get your bling on and don't get bit
