Zombie Shorts

Greetings BZF fans, from the title I suppose you think I am about to share with you the latest fashion trend in Hotpants – sadly no.  I am however going to share with you some Zombie short films hand selected by yours truly.

This fine selection ranges from the ‘not bad’ to the ‘sooooo bad’ and are enjoyable for different reasons but still manage to entertain!

2 Hours is an award winning short film, focusing on a guy who is bitten but only has two hours to find other survivors so he can receive treatment and avoid turning into Amanda Bynes – I mean a zombie (not sure which is more terrifying).

Heralding from the UK, Prey takes a realistic look at what it would be like for everyday people to survive a zombie apocalypse and fellow survivors. 

Fear of the Living Dead, takes more than just the cake as we witness a wannabe Lara Croft mixed with an underperforming version of Resident Evil’s Alice in this hilarious mess of bad acting, terrible script writing and the most unusual use of a paint brush I have ever seen.  An absolute must for those with an absurd sense of humour.

I have saved the best for last with Holdout.  A very cleverly crafted short film with excellent cinematography, likeable characters and some hilarious one liners.  This short film is definitely worth checking out!!

Apocalypse Hal - Zombie bags

Following on from my zombie wallet survival kit, the question was asked about a fashionable handbag option. Well the idea of Hello Kitty and zombies was too much to pass up.

So what should a woman keep in her zombie handbag? No idea, that is more Miss K's area of expertise. But I came up with a few suggestions:

• animal print scarf - a number of uses
• paperback book (zombie romance maybe?) - great for lighting fires, toilet paper, rolling cigarette, oh and reading
• compact case - use the mirror for peering around corners, signalling, applying the lippy
• make up - use a mascara pencil for writing messages, drawing maps, poking zombies, 
• general survival stuff - lighter, medical kit, power bars etc
• small knife - always useful, try a Gurkha's knife just like the one my mum carried
• Shewee - for girls on the go

DIY Zombie wallet

Here's my customised zombie wallet survival kit!

And some details on how I created it.

It struck me that a wallet was a pretty handy way to carry things so I bought a cheap fabric wallet and went to work.

By sewing across the wallet were it folds I turned the money slot into three smaller pockets. Each the perfect size for a ziplock bag. So I made three kits:
- medicine kit - alcohol wipe, razor blade, painkillers, cotton wool, heavy duty band aids etc
- snare kit - fishing line, hooks, snares, wire, etc
- tool kit - duct tape, hack saw blade, string, needles and thread, magneto file for sharpening knives etc

In the other pockets and slots there is a mini cigarette lighter, small pen knife, whistle, information cards and money. I picked up a Munkees compass, thermometer and mini LED light combo for $10 and cable tied it to the back of the wallet. Then added a spare karabiner. 

I found an iron-on zombie patch and some cool zombie pins at a local store so added for some bling. Also designed a label to fit in the clear plastic pocket.

So it's a bit too fat for the hip pocket but is okay for an inside jacket pocket or clipping to your belt or backpack. I saw some interesting travelers wallets that fit under your arm. It is easy enough to rig this up with some paracord. And of course there are those money belts for travelers too. Both offer possibilities.

Mmm maybe I should get the sewing machine out?

What's in Mrs K's apocalyptic makeup bag

Ok this post could be considered a little indulgent but I do have one impractical love that I am just not willing to let go of in the zombie uprising....shower gel! Yes I know it's ridiculous and that the chance to regularly showing is not part of traditional survival activities but I feel they will play a very important part in my resilience and mental health when we are all left with a world full of horrors. For me jumpingin the  shower and lathering up is not just a every day repetitive task but more of a ritual. The fragrance of my chosen gel for the day connects me to different memories, places and people and put simply just makes me feel happy, so I ask who will still not want to have that connection when your whole world has been ripped about, you get separated from family and friends and someone is trying to eat you on a daily basis!

So here is what I have got currently on the go in my shower. I am a Body Shop devotee from way back so no surprises that is where most of these come from. First up is the Hemp body wash body wash, this has a light earthy fragrance but its appeal is that It seems to coat you in blanket of moisture which is a dose of mega comfort for dry irritated survival skin. Then we have the  Pink grapefruit which smells divine and instantly takes me back to all my favourite summer holidays. I also have this in a cheaper version just from the grocery store, which also does the trick. Finally for the Body Shop is the Strawberry it's a very sweet smell and probably not something I would choose but Mr K gave it to me for Christmas so I tend to use it when we are apart for any reason because it reminds me of him and all his amazingness, which will be important if he gets eaten first! Now to the holy grail of shower gels, expensive and indulgent and it's the one I always reach for when I'm tired, grumpy and stressed and need a big dose of happy thoughts, Mor's marshmallow shower and hand gel, the smell is rich and amazing and and it instantly takes me back to my happiest childhood memories, like birthday party's, pyjama days with mugs of hot chocolate, picnics and the list goes on.

I will be making sure that at least a couple of these fit into my survival pack, I am sure they will work just as well in a bucket!!

By the way the camo wallet advice is based an a true story. When camping with my high school friends years ago, Haggis dropped his camo wallet and sure enough it stayed hidden despite all our searching.

Apocalypse Hal - Hard Tack

Well it is winter here, so a perfect time for some baking and stocking up the pantry. One of the classic foods for packing away is hard tack. It has also been called sea biscuits, ANZAC wafers and a bunch of less flattering names.

This recipe is a cut down version from the Australia War Memorial website. It is based on the recipe Arnotts used when making them for Aussie troops during the second world war. If you want the old original recipe, just like my mum makes, it's simple:

• plain flour
• salt 
• water

The baking steps are the same.  It is called hard tack for reason and they were general soaked first or ground up for cooking. Yum!
